EtymologyVeleja Romana (municipality of Lugagnano Val D’AArda, province of Piacenza). Initially founded by the
Ligurian Veleiati, it was then conquered by the Romans becoming, during the last years of the Roman
Republic, seat of a municipium and capital of a middle-Apennine area that extended between the rivers
Trebbia and Taro, thanks to the availability of thermal waters. The name comes from that of the Ligurian
tribe of Veleiates or Veliates, who were the founders of the first nucleus of the town. (4)
