LemmaRomagna Peach and Nectarine
Domain and subdomainAlimentation – fruits
Grammatical labelNoun, sing.
DefinitionThey are fresh fruits produced by the peach tree, with different varieties (yellow and white pulp),
and obtained with traditional and eco-friendly techniques, by using policy documents for
integrated production.
NoteRomagna PGI peach and nectarine are two traditional fruits of Emilia-Romagna that can be
both with yellow pulp and white pulp. These fruits are cultivated in the zones of Bologna,
Forlì-Cesena, Ferrara and Ravenna. This zone is characterised by a climate typical of the
Padana Plain but also influenced by the proximity to the Adriatic sea, without frosts, that
make its culture perfect. (2)
The nectarine is different from the peach because of its completely hairless peel and its
bright and luminous surface. The peach in general presents a more curved form and red-coloured
with orange and yellow shades skin. The pulp is savoury and sweet, the parfum is intense and
particular. (3)
ContextThe Romagna peach and nectarine are among the first peach varieties to have been given a
Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in Europe. They are hybrids between different
varieties with white and yellow flesh. (4)
