| Definition | Gutturnio is a DOC wine whose production is allowed only around Piacenza. In 1967, it was classified as one of the top ten Italian wines and it has been the first wine of Piacenza to receive the denomination of Controlled Origin. (1) |
| Note | Gutturnio has a shiny ruby-red colour with a variable intensity that increases with the aging; the parfum of blackberry and violet is fresh, characteristic and pleasant; its taste is fine, harmonic and full-bodied. It presents one of the following versions, Sparkling, Superior or Classic Superior, Reserve or Classic Reserve. (2) The grapes used for this wine must give to Gutturnio rosso a minimum alcoholic level of 12, to Superior and Classic Superior of 12,5 and to Classic Reserve of 13. Gutturnio Superior must be put in commerce only from the first April of the year following the harvest. For the Reserve designation, there must be a period of aging for at least 24 months, six of which in wooden recipients, starting from the first September of the harvest. (3) |

| Etymology | The name Gutturnio comes back in 1938, proposed by Mario Prati, inspired by the previous discovery, made in 1878, of a big silver cup, “gutturnium”, on the banks of Po river. The following year, in 1939, the name Gutturnio was applied to a label of a bottle of wine for the first time. (5) |
